1 day in Panama from Sapzurro to la Miel

Crossing the border from Sapzurro in Colombia to La Miel in Panama is way easier than it sounds! We obviously DID NOT take a lost path in the middle of the jungle but instead crossed at legal border.

*Trying to cross to Panama off the beaten tracks is extremely dangerous due to military presence, drug traffiquants and all sorts of dangerous animals.*

What you need to do:

If you are staying in Capurganà you should take a lancha to Sapzurro. It is about 10.000 COP per person. Another option is to walk to Sapzurro and it takes about 1h30.

Once in Sapzurro it is a brisk fifteen-minute ascent from the village’s church that leads you to the stunning ridge of Cabo Tiburon, also known as Shark Cape. This ridge marks the official border between Colombia and Panama, and it is diligently patrolled by both Colombian and Panamanian border guards.

Here, your passports do not get stamped, so if you thought you would be able to get another 90 days in Colombia when crossing back into the country, IT IS NOT possible.

As you make a short descent from the ridge, you'll find yourself in La Miel. In order to get to Playa Blanca you’ll need to turn right, walk in front the military base and continue straight on until you get to the beach. You will find some restaurants serving fresh fried fish and meat. Don’t worry if you don’t have any Dollars, they accept COP (Colombian pesos).

  • Lunch: +- 15.000 COP

  • Beer: 4.000 COP

The way back requiers the same process as going. Be sure you leave early enough because the border closes at 6pm!
