Layover in Manila

Traveling around the Philippines or elsewhere in south east Asia will probably require you to stay one or two nights in the capital of Manila. Here is a little guide to help you organize your time and see a bit of the city.

Where to stay in Manila:

Makati is probably the most interesting neighborhood to stay in. I recommend you stay in Lub’d Makati, a hostel that offers very spacious dorm beds and privates. You’ll find a working space area, a game room as well as a rooftop bar.

Where to eat in Manila:

Ha Noi Pho (Vietnamese family run restaurant), Wildflour + bakery (very fancy but delicious coffee spot with outstanding pastries - you should try the mushroom and asparagus omelette with an extra piece of grilled sourdough bread), street food !

How to get around in Manila:

Traffic is terrible in Manila especially between 4pm and 8pm, so download an app for scooters such as move it or moovr. I’d recommend you download grab as well in case you’d like to take a car or get some food delivered.

Gym - Where to work out in Manila:

Gyms in Manila can get a bit pricey so this is how you do it: Most gyms offer a free workout trial… you know what I’m implying? 😏 I recommend you find the closest Surge fitness studio and apply online for a free trial as a back-up but they usually just let you in if you ask for a free trial at the reception. Beware that they only accept the free trials from 10 am onwards, but you can always try earlier, as I did, and it worked.

What to do in Manila:

Go for a (free) workout, have a stroll in the huge malls, walk around the city’s streets, chill in a nice coffee spot, hop on a moto taxi and drive around the city, visit the many churches.

And then it is already time to hop on your next flight for more adventures ! ✈️

Important airport notice: Please leave extra early to ensure not to miss your flight due to the traffic’s density. I would recommend you take a moto taxi if you have a backpack to gain some time and avoid missing your flight.
