The Philippines

The country is an archipelagic gem located in South East Asia. Each island is known for a specific reason and offer beautiful sceneries. From Bohol and its Chocolate Hills, to Siargao with its surf spots and blue water beaches, to Siquijor and its mystical allure, … every island is worth a visit.

Fun fact: As a female, you will be called maam by everyone.

Currency : PHP (Phillipino pesos). At the time of writing, 1 euro = 60 PHP. Use XE for real time conversion.

Maximum stay : The maximum stay in the Philippines is of 1 month. But not to worry ! You can easily extend your stay every month for one month at an immigration office. Each extension will cost you 50 euros (3030 PHP)

Entry requirements : Valid passport for at least 6 months before entering the country + proof that you’ll be leaving the territory on time.

*This may change for residents outside of Europe, Australia, and certain Asian countries*

Cost of living: I have mixed feelings regarding the cost of living. Food and transportation (on the islands) is cheap, but as the country is made of islands, and depending on the time you have, you will need to take several boats or flights and that can become very expensive (especially if you need to check-in bags).

Recommended airline : Airasia (This is an affiliate link. By booking your flight via my affiliate link, you will make me earn a % of the purchase without paying more than you would usually. Thank you in advance ☺️ ).

Accommodation is also not that cheap although far different from the European or American prices. Depending on the type of travel you are seeking, I recommend you use Booking or HostelWorld

Regarding transportation, it changes from island to island. Although the tricycles are everywhere, I would recommend using the Grab app in Manila (you can also order food from it when you get a bit lazy). As for the more adventurous islands, I would highly recommend renting a scooter, it is super easy and gives you total freedom. The price per day should be between 300 and 400 PHP (apx. 5 euros).

Food: The Philippino likes meat! Some local dishes include Adobo (Stew - meat marinated in a mixture of vinegar, soy sauce, bay leaves, garlic and black peppercorns), Sisig (chopped and seasoned pork’s pieces mixed with a combination of onions, chili peppers, calamansi and soy sauce), Mami (noodle soup with vegetables and sometimes siomai). Siomai are like steamed cooked dumpling usually filled with pork and vegetables. Do not worry if you are under a vegan or vegetarian diet, you will be able to find many good places!
