Bali: South vs North
Bali can be broadly divided into the northern and southern regions, each offering a distinct atmosphere and experiences for visitors. If you draw a nearly straight line, everywhere underneath the north of Ubud is considered the south and is way more touristy than what is above that line.
Southern Bali: For short, vibrant holidays or long term stays
Southern Bali: Southern Bali is predominantly perceived as a premier vacation destination, drawing visitors with its world-famous beaches, lively nightlife, commercial vibrancy, surf and Yoga. The region, encompassing areas such as Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Uluwatu, is celebrated for its beach resorts, water sports, and bustling entertainment hubs, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a dynamic and vibrant holiday experience, but not really for sightseeing.
THAT SAID, I feel like the south is ALSO suited for long term stays, as everything is super accessible and a lot more westernized. You will find thousands of restaurants, gyms, surf spots, yoga retreats, nice home stays, coffee place to work at,... Everything that you need to create an enjoyable routine.
Although Ubud has a VERY different vibe and a lot more cultural stuff to do compared to the rest of what is considered the south, it still falls into the southern category as a lot has been westernized ready to welcome tourists.

Northern Bali: For adventurous sightseeing and a local dynamic
Norther Bali: The North of Bali is definitely NOT like the South. This is definitely the part where you have a lot of sightseeing to do, and a lot more adventures to look forward to. The beaches are much more tranquil, you have a lot of waterfalls to swim in, mountains to hike, lakes to walk around and temples to daydream in. The rural charm is not comparable to the south of the island; Away from the more touristy areas, North Bali provides a glimpse into traditional Balinese village life. Visitors can explore rice terraces, visit local markets, and experience the authenticity of Balinese culture in a quieter setting.
